General care of your Salzuflen cocker spaniel
I am growing very quickly and must have good food and a dry place away from draughts, dampness and cold, where I won't be disturbed.
I will need a bed which keeps me off the floor-steel framed dog stretchers are great, and some blankets.
Like any baby, your puppy will enjoy lots of toys to play with, however be aware that he will love to chew, so check any toys for small parts which may come off and choke your puppy.
Cocker spaniels adore children, and will make a wonderful playmate. However, do supervise smaller children with your new puppy, as they can be accidentally hurt if play gets a little rough.
Do ensure that children do not pull his tail, which is particularly fragile during the early months.
As I grow I will need plenty of exercise. I will love a walk, and will also enjoy chasing a tennis ball and a swim at the beach when I am older.
I will require a well fenced yard, and be aware that Cocker Spaniels are renowned for digging, so ensure there are no gaps at the bottom of the fence which could provide an escape route for an adventurous puppy! Sprinkling cayenne pepper on the top of precious pot-plants will also provide a useful deterrent to puppy paws!
My breeders have already begun to train me to walk on a light slip lead. You will find that liver treats, available from the supermarket, are very useful reward when you are continuing my training.
Remember: a little puppy training every day now will ensure a well-behaved dog when I grow up!
Joining your local puppy pre-school or dog club will help with puppy's training and socialisation as well as introducing you to fellow dog lovers.
