Feeding your Salzuflen cocker spaniel

I will need three meals a day until I am about 12 weeks old.

Cut out my lunch first, and continue to feed me two meals a day until I am about 8 months old, when I will need only one meal a day.

Please make sure I have access to clean, fresh water at all times.

My breeders recommend Supercoat dry food. While this may be a little more expensive, it will ensure that I continue to develop a healthy coat and bones, keeping me in top health.

Feed the puppy formula (pink package) until 12 months, moving on to adult formula (red pack) when I turn one.

We also love puppy stew, which is a very healthy and inexpensive feeding option.

Grandma's secret puppy stew recipe

In a large soup saucepan, place 3kg of puppy mince from the butchers', with mixed vegetables (dried soup mix is great), rice or pasta. Cover with water and stew until cooked.

Puppy stew can be kept in the saucepan in the refrigerator for up to a week. Warm to room temperature or slightly above before serving.

Alternatively, you can feed tinned Pal (puppy formula until 12 months old) or sausage meat which can be found in the cold section of the supermarket.

As a treat, I will love cheese, or a scrambled egg for breakfast once or twice a week.

Sample menu

Breakfast:
(7am) 1/4 cup Supercoat or 1/4 cup puppy stew or scrambled egg with grated cheese.

Lunch: (noon) Similar to breakfast, or three raw chicken necks cut up onto small pieces

Dinner: (5.30pm) 1/4 cup dry food and 1/4 cup puppy stew or Pal puppy food or sausage meat
  • Never feed your puppy chocolate, as the pheromones in chocolate can be toxic for dogs.
  • Leave some dry food with puppy overnight.
  • Do not give your puppy cows milk to drink, as it will cause stomach upsets.
  • Never give your puppy cooked chicken bones, as they can easily break and cause him to choke. Any bones given to your puppy must be raw.
  • Brisket bones from your butcher once or twice a week will help to keep his teeth in top condition.
Remember, I am growing all the time, and you will need to increase the amount you are feeding me as I grow.
